What to expect from charming Gozo

Edward Lear once romantically described the island of Gozo as "pomskizillious and gromphiberous". Gozo, or as it was once known, Gaudos, is a mystical island located at the very heart of the Mediterranean Sea and your ideal destination if you are an athlete, an explorer and most importantly of all, an adventurous soul.

The excursus of Greeks and Phoenicians in the Maltese Islands, even if laboriously long, is essential to understand why they were so fascinated by Gaudos that they settled here and made this island their home. An untouched, naturally blessed island with some of the most beautiful coastlines one could imagine, Gaudos was the ideal location for foreign powers to settle and prosper.

Fast-forward several centuries, Gozo still provides a tranquil and serene atmosphere which has become so popular with the thousands who visit the island on a daily basis. The charm of Malta's sister Island is immediately visible upon entering the majestic Mġarr Harbor; it is greener, more rural and smaller in size, with life's rhythms dictated by the seasons, long walks in the countryside and good Mediterranean meals which are synonymous with this island.

Forged in myth, Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso's isle of Homer's Odyssey - a peaceful, mystical backwater full of historical and ancient buildings and artifacts. Small churches and old stone farmhouses which dot the countryside and the majestic panoramas which Gozo offers are truly sights to behold which could be enjoyed best between March and May, when spring is in full blossom. Gozo also possesses some of the best diving spots in the Mediterranean which make this island the explorer’s dream.

The real Gozitan experience, apart from its stunning seascape and interior, lies in the traditional villages. Here, it seems as if time had indeed stood still. The locals treasure their peace and the villages offer a relaxed ambience, providing a wonderful standstill from the modern pace that many cities and larger towns tend to offer.
